Detlef Liebs

Detlef Liebs studied 1955–1960 law in Freiburg and Göttingen, earned his doctorate in 1962, and was 1963–70 an academic assistant under Franz Wieacker. In 1970, he was granted a professorship in civil law and law history in Freiburg, since 2005 as professor emeritus. In 1976 he studied in Paris Latin epigraphy with Hans-Georg Pflaum, Papyrologie and Patristic, in 1984–85 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and in 1989 a visiting fellow of All Souls College at Oxford. Since 2005 he has been a fellow of the British Academy, and since 2006 a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded honory doctorates in Zurich (UZH, 2015) and in Brasilia (IDP, 2018).
